Book Spotlight: Spirits (Sparks Saga, Book Two) by RS McCoy

Bonjour, Beardies!

It has been far too long, so please forgive my absence...

Today, however, I have a special treat, and it's not just my return from the depths of non-existence.

A while back, I spotlighted the first book of Sparks, an exciting new series by RS McCoy. The book, also titled Sparks, was phenomenal. After reading the 5-star book, I was so happy that RS McCoy stumbled upon the blog and requested a review. There was one hiccup, however. Although a top-rated book for me, the editing was lacking. Luckily, RS McCoy agreed to my pleading that I edit it for her. I couldn't let such a great story suffer the stigma of a bad editor.

With that said, I also edited Spirits, the subject of this Spotlight. Let it be known, however, that I show no bias to either book given my involvement—my involvement was a direct response to my absolute love with this series and not the other way around, and I can't wait to give you all the juicy details. And by details, I mean Gems—not spoilers.

Book Spotlight: The Orphan & the Thief by ML LeGette (An 'I Am A Reader Not A Writer' Tour)

orphan tour

Cheers, Beardies!

There are few books that have stumbled into my inbox that make me think, "Damn! That's a great title!" The Orphan and the Thief was one of these and, upon seeing its marvelously creative and beautiful cover, I knew I had to read its premise. But don't worry, Beardies—while I love outstanding covers and think they really enhance a book's appeal (after all, why put a cover on them at all if not to entice?), I do not judge a book by its cover. If anything, I judge a cover by its book. (Some covers really do their book little service, no?)

Book Spotlight: The Weird of Math by Matt Schutt

Bonjour, Beardies!

When we first started offering Review Requests, the title of this Spotlight appeared in my inbox. I was very intrigued by its premise, therefore wanting to read and review it for myself, but I had to put it on the back burner as my commitment plate was already full. I'm glad I decided to hoard it for my own reading pleasure—and I am excited to spotlight it for all of you today!

Book Spotlight: Corrosion by Jon Bassoff

Happy New Year, Beardies!

I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season!  Speaking of Holidays...I apologize for the lack of content on the blog from around Thanksgiving until now. I started a new job around Halloween, and getting used to having a schedule that changes from week to week has been an adjustment—not to mention working during days every once and a while (something I haven't done since 2005). Enough about that, however; we have a book to discuss.

Today's title, Corrosion, comes to us from DarkFuse—a publisher that specializes in horror and dark fantasy, and one from which I've already spotlighted two other titles. Let's just say that I'm a DarkFuse Fan!

Book Spotlight: Sparks (Sparks, Book One) by RS McCoy (A Bearded Scribe Tour)

Bonjour Beardies!

I am so excited to talk about this next title, so I'll keep my introduction of it short. I get several emails daily inquiring about our Promotional Services; when I received RS McCoy's email, I had already turned down every single one in my inbox that day until I came to hers. Now before everyone thinks I'm a cruel jerk, I'll let you know I turned down the others because they were not Speculative Fiction titles and, therefore, did not fit the requirements. Which is why Ms. McCoy's email was so darn refreshing; after I read the premise of it, I had to read it!

Book Spotlight: Shattered by C. S. Kane

Bonjour, Beardies!

After reading Luke Walker's Mirror of the Nameless, I decided to check out the rest of DarkFuse's ARCs on NetGalley. I ran across this next title and decided to request it. I never expected to finish it in only 3.5 hours; part of me wished it were longer or that it were at least the first in a series just so I could read more.

Book Spotlight: Heritage (The Grimoire Saga, Book 3) by SM Boyce

Bonjour, Beardies!

Yesterday I featured a Book Spotlight on Treason, the second installment of SM Boyce's Grimoire Saga, and today the I am excited to announce that the third installment, Heritage, releases today! Let's begin, shall we?

Book Spotlight: Treason (The Grimoire Saga, Book 2) by SM Boyce

Bonjour Beardies!

A while back, I featured a Book Spotlight on SM Boyce's Lichgates, the first book in her Grimoire Saga. She was kind enough to send me the second book in the series, too, but I only just found the time to read it—just in time for the release of the third book, Heritage, which is due out and will be featured in its own Spotlight tomorrow. Until then, let's take a look at Treason.

Book Spotlight: The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby by Angela Castillo (A Bearded Scribe Blog Tour)

Bonjour, Beardies!

Although most of our Book Spotlights are either for Young Adult or Adult Speculative Fiction, when this intriguing Middle Grade story fell into my inbox for a Blog Tour, I couldn't pass up the chance to review it.

Book Spotlight: Mirror of the Nameless by Luke Walker

Bonjour, Beardies!

When I first started The Bearded Scribe in 2012, Elizabeth pointed me to a website, called NetGalley, where I could obtain Advance Reader Copies directly from publishers. I occasionally receive emails alerting me of titles in which I might be interested, and last month one such email landed in my inbox.

Most of the titles didn't capture my interest; none, really, save one: a new horror. Although I am not much for the gory side of horror, I do enjoy a well-written scary tale and the darker side of fantasy. Mix in a bit of divine intervention and some paranormal flavoring, and you have a chilling recipe for a delectable ghoul-ash...

That is the case of the today's Book Spotlight, Mirror of the Nameless by Luke Walker.

Book Spotlight: The Keeper and the Rune Stone (The Black Ledge Series, Book One) by Paige W. Pendleton

Greetings from Maine, Beardies!

Not really, unfortunately, but almost!

For those of you who don't already know, I'm a Mainah—that is to say, a person from Maine. While I don't live there now, it is where I was born and raised. It's where my muthah and fathah and the rest of my family live. What's WICKED cool is so does the author of our Spotlight book, Paige Pendleton.

When Paige's Review Request landed in my inbox, I smiled with pride. If anyone was going to review a fellow Mainah, it'd be me, ayuh! And so, no one else on the staff even saw it venture to the Review Request list—I took it for myself.

Those of you who are 'from away' (not from Maine) are probably thinking I've gone and bumped my noggin' with the way I'm talking—well, technically writing—but it's not very often that I get to let loose and use my Maine-speak. Every now and again you'll hear it slip out of my mouth, but it's a rare treat.

Paige and I became fast friends on Facebook even before I started reading her title (I was backlogged for Reviews at the time). We Mainefolk stick together. There aren't many in the world (other than a Mainah) who would even understand the following sentences:

"I pahked my cah up the rud apiece."
--or--
"How 'bout some bugs an' steamahs for suppah?"

And it's for that reason, whether we actually speak that way or not, Paige and I will remain friends; it's also why she and I will keep the translations of them to ourselves! ;)

Good Evening, Beardies!

On Sunday I did a Book Blast on Emma Right's novel, Keeper of Reign, as part of a Book Tour. Here is the second installment of that Tour, a Book Spotlight on said title.

Book Spotlight: The Haunting Season by Michelle Muto

Bonjour Beardies,

Yesterday, as you all know, The Bearded Scribe hosted a stop on a Blog Tour for Michelle Muto's title, The Haunting Season. Today I will be digging a little deeper into this Paranormal Fantasy, highlighting specific strengths of the author—strengths that writers should consider emulating in their own stories.

Book Spotlight: Call of the Herald (The Dawning of Power Trilogy, Book 1—A World of Godsland Novel) by Brian Rathbone

Good Ev'ning, Beardies!

This Spotlight has been long overdue, and I sincerely apologize to Brian Rathbone for its delay. Reading it required a Kindle, and whereas I have the Kindle App on both my phone and laptop, reading on either one is a nightmare! Alas, my birthday rolled around, as they usually do, and not only did I get a year older (though, technically, I only aged a day!), I also received my now-beloved Kindle.  That beautiful, monogrammed case you see is via DODOcase, and its interior is my favorite shade of purple!
At any rate, Rathbone's was the first title I read on my Kindle—and what a refreshing read it was! So, without further ado...

Book Spotlight: Lichgates (The Grimoire Saga, Book 1) by SM Boyce

Bonjour Beardies,

I started reading this title back in November, originally as part of a blog tour; unfortunately, due to my schedule, I missed the blog tour. I promised the author, SM Boyce, however, that I would still to do a Book Spotlight on each of the books in the series (so far there are two, but there are four total planned). Lichgates is the first book of The Grimoire Saga, and is the subject of this Spotlight.

Book Spotlight: Death Watch (The Undertaken Trilogy, Book One) by Ari Berk

Hello Beardies,

I can't begin to describe how excited I am to bring you this Spotlight on Death Watch, one that has been long over-due and in the works since the blog's inception a little over a year ago.  As many of you well know, my alma mater is Alma College, but it is not the only college I attended...

After leaving Alma in the second term of my third year, I moved just fifteen minutes north to Mount Pleasant, home of Central Michigan University. It is upon enrolling part-time—with Jeremiah's encouragement—that I met the author of today's Book Spotlight, Dr. Ari Berk and his wonderful wife, Kristen.

New Guest Scribe: Kelsey J. Mills

Good Morning, Beardies,

As many of you who follow the blog on Twitter already know, it is no secret that I have been seeking new talent to add to my already wonderful and dedicated team of reviewers. Because of their dedication and support, and perhaps without them even realizing it, I have found yet another talented writer to join The Bearded Scribe Team.

Book Spotlight: The Alchemyst (Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, Book 1) by Michael Scott

***I selected this post to be featured on Book Review Blogs.***
***Please visit the site and vote for my blog!***

Good Evening, Beardies,

Back in May, we did an Author Spotlight and giveaway with Michael Scott, author of the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Series. The contest, and his subsequent interview, were very successful, so it didn't take us long to decide to do a collaborative series of Book Spotlights featuring each of the Flamel books. Unfortunately, finding time to collaboratively write the posts took much longer, but we finally did, and we couldn't be more excited to bring you the first in this series of Book Spotlights.

***I selected this post to be featured on Book Review Blogs.***
***Please visit the site and vote for my blog!***

Good Evening Beardies,

Many of you may remember my first ever Author Spotlight on my writing coach, Joseph Nassise.  As a prequel to a follow-up Spotlight--this time complete with an interview--I am doing my first ever Book Spotlight on Eyes to See, the first book in Nassise's Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles.
