Book Spotlight: Silent Intrusion by Adam Gillrie (A Bearded Scribe Blog Tour)

Happy Day, Beardies!

Where has the time gone? January is done, and February is upon us! I'm learning time flies—whether I want it to or not. These winter months are screaming past, though, and I couldn't be happier about it. I'm looking forward to clear skies, warm breezes, and flowers blooming. I wish I had a funny story to share about what's been going on with me the last few months—but alas, it was just boring, every day life. No one wants to hear me go on and on about work, school, homework, stomach flu, etc. (If you do, follow me on Twitter.) I'm happy to be back doing another Spotlight today. Let's get to it, shall we?

Premise:
Breaker is an underachieving military aide. He just can't seem to do anything right. When the General puts him in charge of finding out who or what is causing thousands of people to disappear will Breaker be able to step up to the challenge? Will he be able to solve one of the US Military's greatest mysteries?

Gems for Writers:
Genre-Blending. I was pleased with the blending of sci-fi, militaristic themes, and mystery. I tend to get leery of books that try and throw more than one genre together. Sometimes it can all get a little lost in translation. Mr. Gillrie took the time to balance and blend them all together effortlessly. The book really needed all these elements to compel the story and move it along. At no point in the book was any one genre outweighing the others.

Suspense. I found myself asking a lot of 'W' questions. WHO are these creatures? WHAT do they want? WHAT is happening? From WHERE did they come? WILL they be able to figure out this stuff? Suspense was definitely well incorporated into this story. Just when I thought I had something figured out—BAM!—something else was revealed which just led to more questions.

Pebbles to Polish:
Poor Editing. This book definitely needs a brush up on its editing. Spelling errors, grammatical errors, and formatting issues were all present and, often times, distracting when reading the book. There was also strange dialogue that just seemed out of place and really confused me as a reader. I think the first chapter of the book would served as a better ending and lead-in for Book 2.

Rating:

Conclusion:
This story has a lot of potential. If the editing had been better I would have given this a solid 3 (quite possible 3.5). I liked Breaker and his military comrades. I want them to save the world from the strange alien invaders. After finishing the book, it inspired me to break out my X-Files DVD Collection and watch a few episodes. Mulder and Scully forever!

Until next time...
